One day, the King gave a party in the palace garden.
There were six tables placed in the shade of some tall trees. Some people
joined the party. Suddenly, an old woman entered the garden. She approached
each table and begged for food. No one gave her any, and the King told his
guests to chase her away. “Your Majesty, please have a pity on me! I have not
eaten any food for several days.” The queen became angry “Go away old woman!

cried. Everyone chase her.
Suddenly, there was a great crash of thunder and a bright
flash of lighting, the old woman changed into a beautiful girl. “you are not
human being!”, she said. “no one wanted to help me. Because of this I shall
change you into monkeys!”, she clapped her hands. Immediately the spoon turned
into tails and fixed themselves on the back of the king. The beautiful dress
and clothes turned into long hair. Their finger and toe grew longer, and they
could only chatter like monkeys.
They ran back to the palace, but the guard chased them
away and threw stone at them “go away!”, the guard shouted. They had nowhere to
go, so they hid in the forest and hills where they have lived ever since.

Every week, the rabbit went to the woods to shoot buffaloes.
However the bear was very greedy, he did not allow the rabbit to get any meats.

The bear had five children. His wife always gave her
youngest boy an extra large piece of meat. Secretly, he would take the meat
outside and pretend to play ball with it. Then the baby bear would kick down
the meat towards the rabbit’s house. In this way, poor rabbit would get his
meal unknown to the papa bear
THE
CLEVER TURTLE
There was once a king who loved sons and nephews very

monster. They started to cry. The king told his servant “Go and kill the
monster!”
The king’s chief cook said “I don’t know what monster it
is. Let’s throw into the fire!”, the cook’s wife said “no, I don’t want to
waste my firewood. Drop a big rock on the monster and crush it!”
An old man said, “push him into the sea. There will be
storms and it will surely drown.” When the turtle hear this, it shouted “you
can burn me or crush me with a rock. But please don’t throw me into the sea.
I’m so afraid of drowning in a storm.”
The king said “The monster is more afraid of the sea than
everything else. Throw it into the sea!” the servant threw the turtle into the
sea. The clever turtle swam away happily.
THE
CAT AND THE FOX
Once,
a cat and a fox were traveling together. As they went along, picking up
provisions on the way. A stray mouse here, a fat chicken there. They began an
argument.
“you think you are extremely clever, don’t you?”, said
the fox “do you want to know one of my tricks? Why, I know a whole sack full of
tricks!”. “Well, I admit I know one trick only, but that one, let me tell you,
is worth a thousand of yours!”
Just then, close by, they heard a hunter’s horn and the
yelping of a pack of hounds. In an instant, the cat was up a tree, hiding a
mong the leaves. “this is my trick”, he called to the fox. “now let me see what
yours are worth.”
But the fox had so many plans for escape that he could
not decide which one to try first. He dodged here and there with the hounds at

man. He looked like a hunter, he was tall and handsome. No one knew who he was
or where he came from. Maria liked him. He liked her too.
Maria did not know this but he was an anito or a spirit
from the sky. They became friends but the young man never asked Maria to become
his wife.
“I have no parents or brothers or sisters”, she said “you
do too. I am sure we could be happy together”.
“I didn’t want to tell you this, but I am an anito. I can’t marry a
human being. I have return to the sky.”, the young man said. Maria was
surprised. She did not know what to say. “Please let me go”, said the young
man. “I had hoped you would never find out who I am”
There was a blinding flash of light and the young man
disappeared. But Maria was holding on to his hands so tightly, he left them
behind. Of course Maria was frightened. She ran home and buried them in her
garden. Soon she saw a strange plant growing where she had buried them. The
plant grew fast. Then some fruits appeared. It was yellow and shaped like a man’s
hand with fingers on it. It was first banana.
WHY
MOUNTAINS ARE MADE OF STONE
Do you know why mountains are made of stone?
At the beginning of the world, a man named Ekon live in
Luzon. He liked to build thing, He thought it would be excellent idea to build
a bridge to the sky, he built it of stone, he worked for years. All of his
family helped him to build the bridge. But the sky always seemed to be long
distance away.
When Ekon became an old man, his wife and children told
him that he would never finish it. “If I can’t finish it, my children’s
children will do so”. But just before he died, his wife and children told him
that they could not find any stones. So Ekon became very angry and
disappointed. He pulled down the bridge, it became tumbling down with a great
roar.
The stones made great
heaps all over the country. These great heaps of stone are what we now call
mountains. Ekon was buried under one of them himself

He was laughing at the turtle for being so slow. The turtle challenge him to a
race. The rabbit thought this was a good joke and accepted the challenge. The
fox was to be the umpire to the race. As the race began, the rabbit raced way
ahead of the turtle, just like everyone thought. The rabbit got to the halfway
point and could not see the turtle anywhere. He was hot and tired and decided
to stop and take a short nap. Even if the turtle passed him, he would be able
to race to the finish line ahead of him. All this time the turtle kept walking
step by step. He never quit no matter how hot or tired he got. He just kept
going.
However the rabbit slept longer than he had thought and
woke up. He could not see the turtle anywhere. He went at full-speed to the
finish line but found the turtle waiting for him.

and grave on this fine grass beside me on safe, level ground.” “No, thank you,”
said the goat.
“Well then, aren’t you cold up there
in the wind? You would be warmer grazing down here beside me in this sheltered
area.” “No, thank you” said the goat. “but the grass taste better down here!”
said the exasperated wolf, “Why dine along?”

herself, “That’s the place for me” and off she went and took up her quarters in
the house, and caught the mice one by one and ate them.
At last the mice could stand it any
longer, and they determined to take to their holes and stay there. “That’s
awkward,” said the cat to herself. “the only to coax them out by a trick.” So
she considered a while, and then climbed up the wall and let herself hang down
by her hind legs from a peg, and pretended to be dead.
By and by a mouse peeped out and saw
the cat hanging there. “Aha!” it cried, “you’re very clever, madam, no doubt.

you anywhere near you.”
